The Rwandan President, Paul Kagame , said his country was ‘fully committed to peace’, and described the US-brokered deal with the DRC as a ‘critical step’.
“In December 2025, Rwanda and the DRC signed the Washington Accords. I thank the United States and Qatar, alongside our African institutions for supporting this peace process,” he said. “It is a critical step toward addressing the root causes of conflict in eastern DRC and restoring regional stability.”
He restated Rwanda committed to implementing this agreement, but any threat to the peace and security of our people is unacceptable.
“The threat of state supported violent extremism is unfortunately still very real,” he added.
The Washington Accord
The sides signed the ‘Washington Accords’ in December, a peace and economic deal with US President Donald Trump – which critics suggested was a US ‘grab’ for minerals. Both sides have accused the other of breaking the deal.
Fighting between the DRC army and militias in the mineral-rich eastern region have continued for many years. The DRC claims M23 fighters are backed by Rwanda, which Kigali has always denied.
