South African Army

The South African military (SANDF) has deployed its troops to assist the police in gang -ridden areas of multiple provinces across the country.
The areas include Johannesburg’s Riverlea and Westbury, with other regions including Gauteng and the Western Cape.
‘Most Immediate Threat’
The deployment comes a month after President Cyril Ramaphosa confirmed the rollout, when he called gang crime the ‘most immediate threat’ to democracy and economic development.
Troops have been used before in targeted areas – in 2015, 2017 and 2019 – to target gang crime and violence, but the latest rollout marks a step up in scale.
