The name of the late Nigerian head of State, Late General Sani Abacha echoed in Sierra Leone busiest street.
The Sani Abacha Street is not the longest street in Sierra Leone. It is a prominent and very busy commercial street in the capital, Freetown, but it is not the longest. The street is formerly Kissy Street, about 550 meters long.
Dr Paul Moses confirmed this development in an interview with Trust TV in Abuja. According to him, ” I have travelled to about 15 African countries and when i give lectures in Sierra Leone, Botswana, Liberia and different places, i have reminded of the Abacha street in Freetown”
A deserving Honour
Sani Abacha Street was named after the former Nigerian military head of state, General Sani Abacha, in honour of the pivotal role Nigerian-led ECOMOG peacekeeping forces played in restoring democracy in Sierra Leone during its civil war in the late 1990s.
While Late General Sani Abacha has another street street named after him in Abuja Nigeria, many Nigerians attributed Abacha name to corruption and abuse of office.
Longest Street In Sierra Leone
The longest road named after an individual in Sierra Leone is reportedly Bai Bureh Road, which spans over 4 miles (approximately 6.4 km) from Cline Town to Allen Town. Sani Abacha street (formerly Kissy Street) is only about 550 meters long.
