The Malian Army have receives fuel supplies through the escorts of the Russia’s Africa Corps in Bamako.
This assistance followed a deadly wave of insurgent attacks and thwarted coup attempt last weekend.
Helicopters from the Africa Corps escorted trucks on their way to the city, providing air cover, as well as armoured vehicles in the convoy too.
“Despite militants’ claims about a blockade of Bamako, the capital of the Republic of Mali, today, on May 1, 2026, servicemen of the African Corps, together with the Malian army, successfully escorted a convoy of more than 800 fuel tankers,” the Africa Corps said in a statement.
Earlier, the Russian Defence Ministry reported that its Africa Corps had foiled a coup attempt in Mali at the weekend, by armed groups affiliated with Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin and the Azawad Liberation Front.
On April 29, Mali’s President Assimi Goita described the armed clashes as part of a ‘broader destabilisation plan’, designed and carried out by “terrorist armed groups, with internal and external sponsors providing them with intelligence and logistical support.”
Last weekend’s attacks saw Malian defence minister Sadio Camara killed by a suicide bomb. In addition, another 16 people were injured.
The Malian authorities condemned the acts as ‘cowardly terrorist attacks‘, and promised to bring those responsible to justice, urging citizens to remain vigilant and to rely on official sources of information.
Mali has been facing instability caused by the activities of jihadist and separatist groups. Attacks are regularly carried out on both military targets and civilian infrastructure.
