Galaxy Backbone Limited (GBB) is celebrating the second anniversary of its current Executive Management team, appointed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, marking two years of notable growth in Nigeria’s digital infrastructure and sovereign cloud capabilities.
Since the appointment of Managing Director Prof. Ibrahim A. Adeyanju and his executive team including Honourable Olusegun Olulade, Executive Director, Customer Centricity and Marketing; Muhammed Sani Ibrahim, Executive Director, Finance and Corporate Services; and Olumbe Akinkugbe, Executive Director, Digital Exploration and Technical Services GBB has transformed from a basic connectivity provider to a key driver of Nigeria’s digital ecosystem.
According to a statement signed by the agency’s Head of Media and Corporate Communications, Chidi Okpala, within two years, Galaxy Backbone significantly expanded national digital access.
Broadband connectivity was delivered to nine underserved Local Government Areas under Project 774, extending inclusion to communities previously beyond reliable access.
Fibre-to-Hostel projects were completed at the University of Lagos, University of Abuja, and University of Jos, strengthening academic research and digital learning environments.
Connectivity to strategic national assets, including the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport and key Federal Secretariats, was enhanced to improve operational efficiency and service reliability.
In a major step toward long-term resilience, GBB executed strategic business partnership with one of Africa’s leading provider of inter-connected carrier scale digital Infrastructure Companies, West Indian Ocean Cable Company (WIOCC), reinforcing Nigeria’s national fibre backbone, improving redundancy, and enabling scalable broadband expansion across more states and underserved communities.
This strategic move significantly strengthened the country’s digital resilience architecture.
Beyond infrastructure expansion, the leadership deepened Nigeria’s sovereign digital capabilities.
Enhancing Sovereign Digital Capability
A major focus has been the “1Government Cloud” platform, optimizing digital services for Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs). Notably, the agency launched GovMail, a locally developed secure email solution currently serving over 100,000 public and civil servants.
To ensure reliability, GBB now operates a 24/7 service desk and has reinforced its cybersecurity posture with round-the-clock monitoring. The implementation of the Government as a Platform (GaaP) framework and ISO recertifications have further institutionalized operational excellence.
Despite challenges such as fiscal constraints and rising cyber threats, the agency has received over 20 awards, including the NET5.5G Pioneer Award and Best ICT Provider Company of the Year.

With continued support from the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, Galaxy Backbone remains positioned as the primary custodian of Nigeria’s digital backbone, committed to building a secure and connected future.
