African Countries Mobilises $100 Funds,70,000 Vaccines For Ebola -

Ebola Disease Fund Mobilisation

African countries and international health partners are mobilising $100 million in funding and 70,000 vaccine doses to fight Ebola disease.

These are efforts outlined as part of the cross-border response at a WHO briefing in Addis Ababa on Wednesday.

The DRC representative said the country had received 16,000 of 50,000 expected vaccine doses and mobilised and disbursed $50 million for its response.

“We remain confident we will be able to contain this outbreak, and we will be able to cast out this disease from Africa and avoid its spilling over in the whole region, on the whole continent and to the rest of the world,” he said.

Gavi Initiative

Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, has mobilised $50 million, including $40 million to accelerate vaccine access and $10 million to support affected countries.

“More than 70,000 doses of Ervebo have been made available to support studies on cross-protection and the vaccination of frontline health workers,”stated the Gavi representative.

Uganda’s delegate said the country had deployed health workers and set up treatment centres and laboratories.

“We look forward to partnering with those who want to support the DRC through Uganda . Uganda stands to share experience, including sharing with WHO in how to revise the declaration protocols, including treatment,” he explained.

International Supports

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has mobilised more than $23.6 million and conducted over 19.8 million health screenings at 227 points of entry.

“Migrants, cross-border traders, transport workers, refugees, IDPs, pastoralists and border communities are often among the first populations exposed to these emerging public health threats,” the IOM official said.

WHO, for its part, called for stronger cross-border coordination and information sharing.

“One of the lessons learned in this outbreak is that a virus doesn’t respect borders <…> Administratively, we can say we have borders, but when we look at the way of living of our communities in Africa, we don’t have borders,” the WHO official concluded.

The Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak, declared in May, has spread across six DRC provinces, with more than 5,500 infections and 2,600 deaths.

The UN says infections are “growing exponentially,” while insecurity and community resistance hamper containment.

DRC-Rwanda Signs Peace and Economic Accord

Vaccine Allocation & Trial

Total Doses: The World Health Organization and the International Coordinating Group (ICG) allocated 70,000 doses of Merck’s Ervebo vaccine.

Frontline Use: 50,000 doses are designated for health professionals and frontline workers.

Clinical Trial: 20,000 doses will fund a Phase 3 trial to see if Ervebo protects against the Bundibugyo strain, which is driving the current DRC outbreak and lacks specific approved treatments.

Delivery: UNICEF is managing the shipment of the vaccines and necessary syringes.

Funding & Financial Support

Gavi Support: Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance committed $13 million total—$7 million to ship the vaccines and $6 million for immunization efforts and routine protection.

Continental & Global Funds: Sixteen African countries collectively provided $118 million, while organizations like the World Bank have funnelled hundreds of millions into regional stabilization.
