Mozambique Ravages By Flood -

Mozambique has been ravaging by floods. Heavy rains have caused widespread flooding across southern and central provinces of Mozambique, affecting more than 600,000 people and severely damaging homes, roads and health facilities.

Homes, streets and a church submerged in floodwaters in Bairro Ferroviario as residents wade through inundated neighbourhoods to assess damage and salvage belongings.

“Our houses are underwater. We lost everything we had. We lost it all. We don’t even have anything to eat or any place to stay,” said Beatrice Mucavele, a 74-year-old flood victim.

“The children here don’t have anything to eat, no blankets, no clothes to wear. So we’re asking for help. Some of the houses were knocked down. This rain can stop, but these people don’t have anywhere to go,” another resident said.

According to UN OCHA, more than 600,000 people have been affected across the country. Since October 2025, parts of Mozambique had received about twice their average annual rainfall.

“I don’t know what I’m going to do with my life. I just hope that God will help me,” another victim said. “It’s been raining for a week. This week it’ll be two weeks. And we’re suffering.”

“These rains were worse than in 2000. Much worse,” said a rescue worker.

Heavy rainfall since the end of December has caused flooding in the south of the country. Media, citing the country’s disaster agency, reported that at least 50 people have died, according to the European Commission’s Emergency Coordination Centre.
