Bello Bouba Maigari, leader of the National Union for Democracy and Progress (UNDP), has been chosen as the opposition coalition’s candidate in Cameroon’s upcoming presidential election.
The opposition alliance, made up of the UNDP, the UNIVERSE Party and the Liberal Alliance Party (PAL), will challenge long-time incumbent Paul Biya, who has held power for more than 40 years.
Cameroon opposition political parties’ leaders, Chief Akere Muna of the UNIVERSE Party and Ateki Seta Carson from the Liberal Alliance Party (PAL) joining Bouba to rally supporters.
Appreciation
“Thank you for the courage they show. Thank you for the trust they place in me, thank you for putting Cameroon above personal ambitions,” Bouba told the crowd.
Muna, a human rights activist and former presidential contender, explained his decision to back Bouba.
“We’ve just come back from the Northwest and Southwest, there are huge problems there, are you going to step up and solve this problem? He said yes. So I said let’s go together.”
The coalition was formalised after Muna and Seta Carson withdrew their own candidacies to endorse Bouba.
A former ally of Biya, Bouba served as Minister of Tourism and Leisure from 2011 to 2025.
The 78-year-old, who previously ran for president in 1992 and finished third, announced his candidacy in January. He will face Biya, who is seeking an eighth term, as well as other opposition figures in the 12 October election.
Cameroon Presidential election will be held in a single round, with the president elected for a renewable seven-year term.

Around 8 million voters are expected to participate.
Bello Bouba Maigari was born in 1947, a Cameroonian politician, President of the National Union for Democracy and Progress (UNDP) since 1992.
