85-Year-Old Former Malawian Leader Wins -

Former Malawian leader, 85-year-old Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika from the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), has won the presidential election, marking a significant return to power.

Justice Annabel Mtalimanja, the Chairperson of the Election Commission of Malawi, announced that Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika of the DPP received 3,035,249 votes representing , 56.8 per cent.

While Doctor Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera of the Malawi Congress Party, the incumbent President , received 1,765,179 votes , 33.0 per cent of the total votes cast.

She declared the DPP presidential candidate and his Vice President elected in accordance with the electoral commission guidelines. According to the Malawian constitution, presidential candidate must secured 50 per cent of the total votes to win an election.

“I declare candidate Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika as the President-Elect and Justice Doctor Jane Mamu Ansah Retired as the President and Vice President-Elect of the Republic of Malawi,” she added.

Celebrations

Supporters of Mutharika were seen celebrating results inside the Election Commission headquarters and on the streets while military officials and election staff observed the vote count’s conclusion.

Good Sportsmanship

Earlier before the formal declaration of the results , the incumbent President Chakwera conceded defeat to his predecessor, Mutharika, in the true spirit of sportsmanship. Political observers appreciated President Chakwera for conceding defeat.

He is a potential nominee for Mo Ibrahim price for African leadership for 2025.

It would recalled that former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan conceded defeat to the late President Mohammadu Buhari through a telephone call.

Malawi, currently faces severe economic challenges, including soaring costs and fuel shortages.

Malawi has one of the largest lakes in Africa, the lake is also considered one of the deepest in the world. Lake Malawi runs through three countries Malawi, Mozambique, and Tanzania.
