A Nigerian university undergraduate, Masroor Adeeyo, has emerged a one-day Vice Chancellor at the Federal University Oye Ekiti, FUOYE, Southwest Nigeria
Adeeyo, a final-year student of Political Science emerged One-Day Vice-Chancellor at the 2026 second edition of its innovative One-Day Vice-Chancellor Initiative
The Initiative, held between May and June 2026 under the leadership of the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Joshua Olalekan Ogunwole, was designed to deepen student leadership, promote youth participation in university governance, and identify outstanding students with the capacity for critical thinking, communication, innovation, and service.
The 2026 edition built on the success of the maiden edition held in 2025, reflected the University Management’s commitment to digitalisation, inclusive governance, and practical leadership development among students.
Commenting on the significance of the Initiative, the Director, Directorate of Career Services and Central Coordinator of the FUOYE One-Day Vice-Chancellor Initiative, Professor Adebola Aderibigbe, described the programme as a unique and purposeful platform designed to prepare students for transformational leadership.
According to him,” the Initiative was deliberately conceived to expose students to the realities of leadership, administration, decision-making, public communication, problem-solving, and community service”.
Prof. Aderibigbe noted that the programme goes beyond competition, as it is calculated to transform students into confident, responsible, innovative, and service-driven leaders who can make meaningful contributions to the University, their communities, and the larger society.
Raising A New Generation
He further explained that the Initiative reflects FUOYE’s commitment to raising a new generation of students who are not only academically sound, but also mentally alert, socially responsive, digitally aware, and prepared for the demands of leadership in a rapidly changing world.
The Contest
The process began on 14 May 2026 with a digital call for applications. The call was widely publicised through the University’s upgraded website and the newly commissioned AI-powered university station, FUOYE Voice.
To test the promptness and seriousness of applicants, the application window was opened for only 72 hours.
Interested students were required to submit a one-page formal letter of interest, a one-page Curriculum Vitae, a one-page vision statement titled “My Vision for FUOYE”, and evidence of academic standing showing a minimum CGPA of 4.0.
Applicants were also expected to have a clean disciplinary record within and outside the University.
After the close of applications, the Directorate of Career Services, in collaboration with relevant University offices, conducted a technical and compliance screening.
A total of 51 CGPAs were verified by the Examinations and Records Unit. At the end of the verification exercise, three applicants were disqualified for not meeting the required minimum CGPA.
The qualified applicants then proceeded to a computer-based test held on 18 May 2026 at the University ICT Centre, behind UBA, Oye-Ekiti.
The Assessments
The test assessed the candidates in Current Affairs, Basic Quantitative Reasoning, and Use of English. Out of the qualified applicants, 40 students appeared for the examination. Eni Olaoluwa Favour Afolabi emerged as the best candidate in the CBT category, scoring 279 out of 300 (93%).
Beyond the CBT, the contestants’ application documents were also independently assessed by credible internal and external assessors. These included the formal letter of interest, Curriculum Vitae, and vision statement.
At this stage, Peter Opeyemi Odetunde emerged as the best contestant in the first stage of the cognitive assessment, with a total score of 469 out of 600 (78.17%).
Contest Categories
Several contestants also distinguished themselves in specific categories.
Esther Opeyemi Opawusi stood out in the Letter of Interest category, while Abosede Joy Alagbo and Opeyemi Peter Odetunde were recognised in the Curriculum Vitae category.
Masroor Mahmud Adeeyo emerged as the best in the Vision Statement category. Following the first phase of assessment, the Coordinating Committee set a benchmark of 400 marks for qualification into the next stage. Twenty contestants met the benchmark and moved into the live assessment phase of the Initiative, known as the Five Pillars Engagement.
The Five Pillars Engagement tested contestants in Book Review, Creative Writing, Public Speaking, Corporate Correspondence and Memo Writing, and Problem-Solving Skills.
Contestants reviewed Rich Dad, Poor Dad, wrote creatively, delivered recorded speeches, drafted formal administrative documents, and responded to hypothetical campus-related challenges. The phase was one of the most demanding stages of the competition, as it combined brief training sessions with practical assessments.
To ensure fairness and objectivity, different sets of internal and external assessors graded the various domains.
At the end of this phase, Olamide Racheal Fapohunda emerged as the best in Book Review. In Creative Writing, the co-winners were Boluwatife Ebenezer Paul, Abigail Oluwaseun Saseun, and Favour Ihotu Idoko. Oluwatobiloba Elijah Oshunbunmi emerged as the best in Public Speaking and also won the Problem-Solving Skills category.
In Memo Writing, the co-winners were Boluwatife Ebenezer Paul, Opeyemi Peter Odetunde, and Maria Itunuoluwa Olaseinde. After the collation of results, a minimum average score of 75% was set as the benchmark for qualification into the final phase. Only 10 contestants met the benchmark and advanced to the Community Service Project stage.
The Community Service Project required the finalists to identify specific needs within the University or host community and design practical interventions to address them. The finalists submitted project proposals for approval, executed their approved projects, and provided summaries, evidence of community engagement, and two-minute videos showing the impact of their work.
Outstanding Projects
Among the outstanding projects was Digi Forward FUOYE: Missing Skills, Not Missing Money, executed by Masroor Mahmud Adeeyo. The project focused on digital skills development and attracted a cash prize of ₦100,000, donated by King David Leaders Academy, Ado-Ekiti. The Chief Executive of the Academy, Prince Olaoluwa Adebiyi, also announced free leadership training for all 10 finalists.
Boluwatife Ebenezer Paul executed the IRE-AKARI Project, which identified a need within the host community and mobilised support to address it.
The project attracted a ₦50,000 prize donated by the FUOYE Alumni Association. Opeyemi Peter Odetunde executed FUOYE Scholar, a technology-driven project designed to address major student academic needs.
Blessed Ogunleye Temiloluwa executed the Raising Responsible Citizens Initiative, a nursery and primary school education project focused on citizenship and responsible living. The project won the Prof. Cecilia Akintayo Prize for Excellent Community Project Executed by a Female Student, with a cash prize of ₦50,000.
At the Grand Finale and Award Ceremony, outstanding contestants were recognised for excellence across the various stages of the Initiative. The final scores were computed transparently by the assessment panel, led by the Central Coordinator and Director of Career Services.
In the final executive standings, Masroor Mahmud Adeeyo emerged as the Winner and One-Day Vice-Chancellor with a final cumulative score of 240.
Oluwatobiloba Elijah Oshunbunmi emerged as First Runner-Up with 239, while Opeyemi Peter Odetunde emerged as Second Runner-Up with 238. Ogunleye Blessed Temiloluwa emerged as Third Runner-Up and Best Performing Female with 237.
The One-Day Vice-Chancellor is expected to assume duty on Wednesday, 8 July 2026.
