Nigeria -China Ginger Export Market Boom 3
Ginger exporters in Nigeria are expanding direct trade with China, aiming to boost profits and bypassed intermediaries after Beijing announced duty-free access for exports from 53 African countries from May 1, 2026.
Traders in Kaduna market are handling large quantities of ginger, with workers loading export-ready sacks onto trucks bound for ports.
“We prepare to begin exporting ginger directly to China. It is important to identify reliable dealers and producers who have the capacity to supply independently and consistently,”.
“At the same time, there is a strong need for government intervention. Specifically, support in the form of reduced export taxes,” said trader Abubakar Muhammad
Cutting Out Middlemen
Exporters say cutting out middlemen could improve margins and provide more stable access to international buyers, although domestic challenges remain.
According to Jamila Bello, a ginger exporter, “We urge the government to reduce export duties in order to support exporters like us and improve our competitiveness in the global market. Nigerian ginger is exported to several countries, including the United States, Dubai, Singapore, and now China. It is widely regarded as one of the best in the world due to its strong aroma, high oil content, and overall quality.”
Nigeria is among the world’s largest producers of ginger, with Kaduna State accounting for the bulk of national output. However, the sector has faced persistent constraints, including infrastructure gaps and high export levies.
China’s tariff move is expected to reshape trade flows, offering Nigerian exporters greater access to global markets and increased competition with established producers such as India.
