The Tanzanian government is set to open a regional cancer treatment centre at Benjamin Mkapa Hospital in Dodoma, expected to mark a major leap in healthcare for the East African region in September 2026.
According to available reports , the exterior of Benjamin Mkapa Hospital have been completed and daily operations, including doctors are set to attend to their patients.
Oncologist Dr. Jesse Kashabano said. “After the completion of this centre, we expect it to be equipped with special facilities such as modern radiotherapy machines, nuclear medicine equipment, and other diagnostic machines that will be installed here.”
He added that “Many health professionals will be available here at Benjamin Mkapa Hospital to serve patients and ease the burden on families.”
Specialised Services and Expectations
The new centre aims to provide specialised services with high standards, particularly in radiotherapy and nuclear medicine.
David Shayo, a resident of Dodoma, said “it will reduce treatment costs for citizens in neighbouring regions, as well as travel expenses for those who previously had to seek these services in one particular region or outside the country,”
Tanzania aims to end the need for overseas cancer treatment by 2029 through major infrastructure investments like the Benjamin Mkapa Hospital center, saving millions in foreign currency.
This will position the country as a regional medical hub, already attracting patients from East Africa, particularly Comoros, Malawi, and Burundi.
